Project Title

Empirical constraints on aero-engine components tolerance following ingestion of volcanic ash

Project Description

My project within VERTIGO (integrated project in work package 5: the numerical simulation of physico-chemical processes in eruption plumes and the atmosphere) will focus on an assessment of aeroengine exposure to volcanic ash particulates in consideration of the physical and chemical properties of volcanic ash particles (fine and very fine fraction). This involves numerical experiments using high resolution computational fluid dynamics modelling as well as detailed investigations of particle characteristics and their behaviour during transport in the atmosphere and the engine.
