- Project Title
- Impact of volcanic ash deposits on soil
- Project Description
Our understanding of the impacts (positive and negative) of volcanic ash emissions on terrestrial ecosystems currently remains limited. The effects of ash on the physical, chemical and biological properties of soils are poorly understood despite being a recurrent cause of concern for soil fertility and productivity during and after a volcanic crisis. The short-term effects may be deleterious, but the long-term effects may be beneficial. The type and intensity of the effects are governed by several inter-related factors, including the ash residence time in the soil-plant system, the ash surface reactivity and the receptor characteristics.Through laboratory and field studies, this project will seek to improve knowledge on the linkages between ash deposition and soil chemical and physical fertility, chemical weathering rates in the Earth’s Critical Zone and soil organic carbon sequestration and thus to develop our capacity to predict the range and duration of impacts of ash on soil
