- Project Title
- Modelling aggregation of ash particles in volcanic plumes and the effect on ash cloud dispersion
- Project Description
The research project deals with the quantification of the amount of volcanic ash that aggregate during explosive eruptions under different conditions. Computational models for ash transport already exist, but due to the complexity of ash aggregation processes, they commonly do not take into account for aggregation underestimating ash loading in the near-field and overestimating it in the distal regions. In fact, ash aggregation has a strong influence on the residence time of particles in the atmosphere affecting the premature fallout of fine ash. One of the aim of this project is to explicitly model ash aggregation and extend previous model to dry (due to electrostatic forces) and wet (accretionary pellets) conditions.
The main accomplishments expected consist of i) improving the existing models in order to describe in a quantitative way processes of ash aggregation in volcanic plumes, ii) constraining parameters (e.g. sticking efficiency) by using wind tunnel experiments , and iii) validating modeling results by comparing with real cases (e.g. observed deposits, grain-sizes, satellite data). Results of aggregation processes will be derived from field and laboratories studies. So aggregation processes will be constrained by results of experiments in wind tunnel, field and satellite data.- Research Interests

Meteorology- About me
I graduated in June 2014 at University of Clermont-Ferrand in collaboration with the University of Reunion Island where I did my Bachelor’s Degree, my 4th university year and my Master’s Thesis.
During my academic curses I worked in collaboration with laboratories such as:
-Lab. LACy: I worked on ozone (O3) ground measurements and the variability of the concentration of O3 in different atmospheric layers.
-Lab. GGM: I carried out a comparative study of O3 between in-situ measurements and satellite data (Aura/MLS). We revealed the annual and monthly variability of O3 over a South-Africa station, Irene.
-Lab. LGSR: I did my Master’s Thesis (6 months) based on the survey of the hydrothermal system of Vesuvius volcano.
-Lab. LMV: I studied Volcanology and Geophysics. My personal webpage is available at: http://matthieuporet.wix.com/matthieu-poret
