This field trip will bring us, weather and volcano permitting, to the rim of the Etna’s summit central craters at 3.350 m asl. Please bring clothing accordingly, including strong hiking boots (no running shoes), wind jacket, thick jumper etc., sun protection. We plan to climb approximately 500 m (from 3.000 to 3.350 m asl and from 2.500 to 2.600 m asl) and then descent down to 1.700 m asl. Departure from Hotel will be at 08:00 am. The field trip will include:

  • visit Etna’s summit (bus to 1.800, cable car to 2.500, 4x4 to 3.000 m asl)
  • climb to Montagnola (Voldorad) and
  • descent along the Schiena dell’asino with infrasound monitoring system
  • Lava tube Cassone

Field excursion II (Thursday, 22 September): B. Behncke, D. Andronico

This field trip will bring us, weather and volcano permitting, to outcrops of explosive eruptions on the Eastern flanks of Etna. We plan to study the deposits for their lateral and vertical extent, try to separate different events and constrain the hazard posed by different eruption scenarios.Departure from Hotel will be at 08:00 am. The field trip will include:

  • Outcrops of highly explosive eruptions
  • Stratigraphic analysis in small groups:
    • NE slope (Zona Rifugio Citelli)
    • SE slope (122 BC)
